Director Hayao Miyazaki talks about the "Osamu Sagawa and Hansen's Disease Museum"

On Sunday, January 27, 2019, we held the event "Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the opening of Hansen's Disease Museum Director Hayao Miyazaki Talks with Osamu Sagawa and Hansen's Disease Museum."
Even though the application period for this event was very short, we received many more applications than we had initially expected (about five times as many), so we were forced to hold a lottery to select participants. In addition, because we received so many voices expressing their desire to participate this time, we held a further lottery and made it possible for people to simultaneously watch the event in a special separate room on the second floor.

Well, it has been 25 years since The National Hansen's Disease Museum first opened as Prince Takamatsu Memorial Hansen's Disease Museum on June 25, 1993. When we first opened, the museum was only open for three hours, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and the residents were the main operators of the museum. The permanent exhibition room was also hand-built, from collecting materials to displaying them, by visiting sanatoriums around the country in order to convey the history of Leprosy recovered persons. After going through a lawsuit, The National Hansen's Disease Museum was renovated in 2007, and the central figure was Osamu Sagawa, whose real name is Kim Sang-gwon, and who Director Hayao Miyazaki spoke about today. As a member of The National Hansen's Disease Museum 's management committee and as Storyteller, Osamu Sagawa has taken almost no days off and has been responsible for running The National Hansen's Disease Museum in parallel with his activities as Resident Association.

On the day, Director Hayao Miyazaki, who was close to Osamu Sagawa before he passed away on January 24th of last year, shared his memories of Sagawa. It was an opportunity for not only those who knew Sagawa well, but also those who were meeting him for the first time, to learn about his personality and achievements, and I believe that they were able to once again feel the meaning and value of The National Hansen's Disease Museum, which was created by the people involved.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all those who took the time to gather here during this busy, cold winter season, as well as to Director Hayao Miyazaki and all the media representatives who gave us such a valuable lecture.
We would like to introduce some of the opinions and feedback we have received from our customers.

  • Listening to the story of the exchange between Director Miyazaki and Mr. Sagawa, I was very impressed to understand the wonderful relationship between the two. Leprosy patients struggling to win their hardships and human rights, and listening to Mr. Sagawa's words, "Ignorance creates discrimination," my own history. I was made to reflect on whether I was able to respond properly to people with life, ways of thinking, behavior, and disabilities.
  • It was a very easy-to-understand and deeply understood opportunity in the sense that it was a meeting in memory of Mr. Osamu Sagawa Promin participant, I was very impressed with the encounter with the painting with the promin motif. thank you.
  • The story of the director was very good. I understand Mr. Sagawa's personality well. I saw Mr. Sagawa on the DVD, but he emphasized the importance of coexistence without saying a word about the discrimination and pain he suffered. What a big-hearted and kind person ... I think Mr. Sagawa is a wonderful person. I was also impressed by Mr. Miyazaki's story. I didn't talk about illness, but I felt the depth of the connection (soul and soul) between people. Thank you for the good project. I felt that indifference and ignorance were the worst things to do. I will come to learn again. Promin, the light, makes me want to live together. Thanks! !!
  • The thoughts of Director Miyazaki have been conveyed. I am very sorry that I could not hear Mr. Sagawa's story before I was alive. After hearing the story of Director Miyazaki today, I decided to come to the Hansen's Disease Museum
  • I have never met Mr. Sagawa, but Director Miyazaki tearfully talked about him as a "best friend for many years," and the words "I haven't talked much about Hansen's Disease He showed me the relationship between people who exceeded the limit. Storyteller would find it difficult to make friends even without "Hansen's Disease" but I was really happy with today's story. I'm glad I came. Thank you very much.
  • Osamu Sagawa 's DVD was very concise and the content was very interesting and touching. I want more people to see it. I was also impressed by the deep friendship between Mr. Miyazaki and Mr. Sagawa. I also wanted to visit the museum. Thank you very much.
  • I pray for Mr. Sagawa's soul and at the same time think about what I can do. Also Hayao Miyazaki was very wonderful, and I could respect the way he interacted with the ossuary and facilities, and his attitude, and I felt it was great.
  • Osamu Sagawa and Hayao Miyazaki 's "friendship like an old friend", I felt the reverberation of their humanity. We pray that the forest of Zenseien, including this museum, will be further enhanced as a forest of human rights. As Mr. Sagawa said, I hoped that it would remain forever and that it would be a place for Hansen's Disease
  • Previously, when I was visiting the museum, I was thinking of coming and watching a DVD when I had time, but I couldn't do it. This time, I was asked by Director Miyazaki for a while, but I'm glad I was able to see Storyteller I thought that my memory was faint. I wanted the museum to continue forever so that I wouldn't forget it.
  • Mr. Sagawa's Storyteller VTR was energetic and carefully expressed, and I was impressed. In addition, the director's personal tone and the overflowing feelings from his relationship with Mr. Sagawa made me cry. I would like to see the actual painting and confirm the friendship between the two and go home.

We would like to continue to consider plans that many people can participate in so that it will be a place where Hansen patients and Former leprosy patients Thank you.
