In sanatoriums under the isolation policy, the production and distribution of foodstuffs was carried out by Patient procedures. On the other hand, food was not only a means of life support and recovery, but also a urgent pleasure for Leprosy patients and Former leprosy patients whose taste and smell are rarely affected.
In this issue, we will tell you about the changes in the mechanism of food and the thoughts of patients and Former leprosy patients that can be glimpsed through food through the materials in the museum collection.

Report on food in quarantine

Lecturer: Naoko Nishiura (Naoko Nishiura The National Hansen's Disease Museum curator)

The last online museum talk in 2021 talked about the changes in food in the Hansen sanatorium from the time when the isolation policy began to the present. Food is positioned as an indispensable factor for medical care and living, as one aspect of oppression in the Leprosy sanatorium, as a sign of the joy of living and the connection between people.
In this lecture, we will introduce photographic materials, menus and tools related to meals, and see how the mechanism of food production, cooking, and meal distribution, which has been carried out by Patient procedures, has changed, and we can get a glimpse of how it lives from writings and tanka. I traced the thoughts of patients and Former leprosy patients put into the activities that are the basis of living.
We received many questions and impressions from the participants. We will prepare archived videos from The National Hansen's Disease Museum YouTube channel later.
We will continue to provide talks on the Issues related to leprosy from various perspectives, making use of the opinions received in the questionnaire.

From the questionnaire

  • The enjoyment and expectations of human beings regarding "eating = living", physical and age difficulties and ingenuity, social isolation and difficulties due to group life are conveyed from the careful reading of the works and photographs of the residents. I've been.
  • I had a very interesting look and listen to the talk on the very familiar theme of "food". I applied from a very simple interest that he would talk about what kind of eating habits he had at the sanatorium using a lot of pictures, but the food was "how to live" and "that person is that person." I think it's true that the story of "being there" is connected to the roots of a person.
  • I found it very interesting to see the diversity of life in a straightforward way for everyone.
  • I was taken care of by the children's workshop during the summer vacation. This time, the theme was "food", so I was very interested in it and participated. Mr. Nishiura's polite and easy-to-understand explanations made it possible for us, who have no particular knowledge, to understand and gain knowledge. It was very easy for Mr. Nishiura to read the sentences illustrated in the course. And the commentary that the scene came to me as if I was there was very good.

… We have received many other answers. Thank you very much.
