Thanks to your support, The National Hansen's Disease Museum has reached its 20th anniversary since it opened as Prince Takamatsu Memorial Hansen's Disease Museum on June 25, 1993.
We will continue to enhance our activities and strive to resolve Issues related to leprosy.

Ceremony to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the opening

June 25 (Tuesday), The National Hansen's Disease Museum together, "opening 20 anniversary ceremony" was held on the day of the opening of 1993 in the video hall.

Fujio Otani first director bust unveiling ceremony

Following the 20th anniversary ceremony, the "Unveiling Ceremony of the First Director of Fujio Otani's Bust" was held in the lobby The National Hansen's Disease Museum
This bust, Hansen's Disease Mr. Kiichi Sumikawa to honor the achievements of the Hatsuyo Otani director in the policy been produced by (former Tokyo University of the Arts President) The National Hansen's Disease Museum is Tama Zenshoen Resident Association that supposed to be exhibited at the lobby borrowed from is.

[Biography of the first director of Fujio Otani]
Born in Shiga prefecture in 1924. During the war, he was involved in Leprosy patients as a volunteer under the guidance of Associate Professor Noboru Ogasawara, Dermatology Special Laboratory, Kyoto University. Graduated from Kyoto University School of Medicine in 1952, joined the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 1959, director of the Medical Affairs Bureau in 1981, retired in 1983, and chairman of the Fuji Kaede Association (currently the Fureai Welfare Association) in 1988. In 1992, as a project for the 40th anniversary of the Fuji Kaede Association Prince Takamatsu Memorial Hansen's Disease Museum, which opened in 1993 and became the first director. In 1994, he announced the so-called "Otani's view" calling for the abolition of the Leprosy Prevention Law" and the enactment of a new law, which triggered the enactment of the "Law Concerning the Abolition of the Leprosy Prevention Law
We will pass on the false Hansen's Disease isolation policy and the history of hardships to posterity, and strive to eliminate prejudice and discrimination and Former leprosy patients in society. Received the Leon Bernard Award in 1993 and the Human Rights Award of the Tokyo Bar Association in 2007. In the same year, he became the honorary director of The National Hansen's Disease Museum He passed away in 2010 (86 years old).

Looking back on 20 years of activities through photo panels and other displays

During the series of 20th anniversary events (June 25th to July 28th), a commemorative exhibition was held at The National Hansen's Disease Museum gallery. The exhibition looked back on the activities of the association from the preparation stage of its founding in 1992 to the present day, using 50 photographs, publications, documents, etc., as a "record of activities to learn about and continue the meaning of our existence."

A 20th anniversary lecture was held inviting Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara, Honorary Director of St. Luke's International Hospital. The speech by Dr. Mieko Kamiya, entitled "The Way of Life of Dr. Mieko Kamiya, who devoted her life to patients with Hansen's Disease
