“Carville” My Home / Mi Casa ~Interview with Jose Ramirez Jr.~

-José Ramirez Jr. Profile-
Certified Clinical Social Worker.
Currently, he is a specialist in charge of the Department of Intellectual Disabilities in the City of Houston, Texas (Harris Ward).

Born in 1951. 12 brothers and sisters (several of them developed Hansen's Disease, but were cured with home treatment). Mr. Jose was seriously ill, and in 1968, when his diagnosis of Hansen's Disease was confirmed, he was immediately admitted to the National Hansen's Disease Hospital and Sanatorium in Louisiana, where he was discharged eight years later.
Since entering Kerrville Sanatorium, he has worked to eliminate the discriminatory treatment that remains within Inside the sanatorium, and continues to protest against the use of the term "Leper," which symbolizes discrimination.
Mr. Jose is one of the few people who is blessed with strong family ties. In particular, his strong bond with Magdalena, with whom he promised his future in high school, is particularly moving. Even after the two got married and became parents of a son and a daughter, they continue to speak out against discrimination against Hansen's Disease along with their children.
