Special Exhibition TAKASHI KITA Exhibition (in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture)

北高作陶展ポスター

This exhibition will feature approximately 30 ceramic works by Kita Takashi.

Kita-san was born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1932 (Showa 7). He was diagnosed with Hansen's Disease at the age of 17 and received treatment at Osaka University, but he faced severe prejudice in his community and began to seek refuge in his faith in Tenrikyo. After undergoing the course of the Tenrikyo training course, he began to spend his days searching for his own way of life within his faith.

In 1959, at the age of 27, he was recommended by a Hyogo Prefectural official to enter Nagashima-Aiseien. Along with treatment, he also engaged in photography and literary activities. Later, while visiting Tama Zenshoen several times for treatment, he encountered pottery, which was being carried out as part of rehabilitation, and after transferring to Tama Zenshoen in 1984, he continued to produce even more works. Before he knew it, it went beyond functional rehabilitation training and became a definite purpose in life.

Outside of the garden, together with other members of the pottery studio, they are still very active, holding exhibitions in Higashimurayama, Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture, as well as the "Tama Zenshoen Ceramic Studio Five-Person Exhibition" at the Shimane Art Museum in 2004.

Overcoming despair and physical disabilities, Kita-san has found the meaning of his life in pottery. Please take this opportunity to see these works, which are filled with the preciousness of human life. We look forward to your visit.
