hundred years of isolation

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Public sanatorium, The National Hansen's Disease Museum will be holding a special exhibition entitled ``One Hundred Years of Isolation'' for nine months.
First, we will hold a pre-planning exhibition, `` Public sanatorium through photographs, for a total of two months, approximately two weeks at each sanatorium. Please take a look at the daily life, annual events, Patient exercises, cultural activities, etc., as well as the characteristics of each of the five sanatoriums that can be glimpsed through these photos. Following this, the special exhibition ``One Hundred Years of Isolation - The Birth of Public leprosy sanatorium'' will be held for five months. We will introduce the circumstances surrounding patients and sanatoriums 100 years ago, including the background to the enactment of the policy, the history of the establishment of each of the five sanatoriums, and the reactions of the local community, based on newspaper articles from the time and minutes of the Imperial Diet. As an incidental project, we will also hold a symposium to discuss why the sanatorium needed a moat and earthworks when it first opened, using photos from the time.
We hope that this exhibition will serve as an opportunity to reconsider the history of suffering of Leprosy patients and Former leprosy patients.

Notice of incidental business

1st Symposium “One Hundred Years of Segregation”

Theme: Digging up memories of isolation - The "moat and earthworks" surrounding the "Patient area" Zensei Hospital-

Zensei Hospital, which opened in 1909, had a large moat and earthworks surrounding Patient area. The reason for this is that Kensuke Mitsuda was appointed as the medical director at the time of Zensei Hospital founding and soon became the hospital director, decided to (1) prevent patients from escaping, and (2) strictly separate non-infectious and infectious areas. (3) To prepare for attacks from outside, it is later explained. Why did such a large-scale ``fortress'' have to be built at the boundary separating the ``inside'' and ``outside'' of the sanatorium?
At Hansen's Disease Museum, we would like to reflect on the sanatorium's 100th anniversary together with everyone by introducing valuable photographs, maps, and testimonials from the time.
