History of Matsuoka Hoyoen Event Report

Memorial museum: Daisuke Matsuoka Hoyoen

We asked about the history of Matsuoka Hoyoen Sanatorium, the northernmost sanatorium in Japan located in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture. Beginning with the competition to attract land at the time of its establishment, Director Mototoshi Nakajo conducted research on the history of the predecessor, the Northern Sanatorium in Ward 2 and the harshness of isolation, and the state of medical care before the introduction of Promin. He explained various aspects of TR, tanka activities, and the controversy caused by Towao Takita's poem.
In addition, in the pre-recorded video, we were able to see the historical sites and nature in the Inside the sanatorium.
Many questions were asked from the participants, and we were able to hear their deep interest in the location of the garden, artistic activities, and religious facilities in particular.
We will continue to deliver talks on the Issues related to leprosy from various perspectives, making use of the opinions we received through questionnaires and other means.

From the questionnaire

  • A detailed explanation of the establishment of Matsuoka Hoyoen deepened my understanding.
  • Under these circumstances, it was difficult to visit the recreation center and the Memorial museum, but I was very grateful for the video that guided me through the Inside the sanatorium.
  • Many people don't know about the existence of a sanatorium, even though it's nearby, so it was easy to understand because they told me about the location. I am currently studying to become a curator, so I felt a sense of familiarity with his opening remarks, "I will be able to give a museum talk in four years." Thank you very much.
  • It seemed that the honest personality of the lecturer, Curator Sawada, was conveyed. I have never had the opportunity to learn about the history of Matsuoka Hoyoen Hoyoen and what was happening at that time, so I learned a lot. I personally visited Matsuoka in 2018 when the exchange hall was just completed, but there was a history of Matsuoka that I could not know just at that time, and I wanted to go again someday.
  • It was very interesting to read the detailed explanation with a map of the background of the historical installation process and the current layout of the building. (Omitted) Also, the video introduction of the Inside the sanatorium in each season was fresh and wonderful.

… We have received many other answers. Thank you very much.
