ABOUT HANSEN'S DISEASE

What is Hansen's Disease?

Hansen's disease is a progressive chronic infectious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae.
Infection does not always cause the onset of the disease, and the disease itself is rare nowadays.
Even if there is an onset of disease, the symptoms do not progress rapidly. The initial symptoms are skin rash and sensory paralysis.
In the days when there was no cure, the disease could cause deformities and leave severe sequelae even if healed.
Today, effective therapeutic medicines have been developed, and early detection and treatment can cure the disease without leaving any sequelae.
