“One Hundred Years of Isolation”: Information on the 1st Symposium
*Event has ended

Theme "Digging the memory of isolation-" Hori / Earthworks "surrounding the" Patient area Zensei Hospital

Zensei Hospital, which opened in 1909, had a large-scale moat and earthworks surrounding Patient area. The reason for this is that Kensuke Mitsuda was appointed as the medical director at the time of Zensei Hospital founding and soon became the director, decided to (1) prevent patients from escaping, and (2) strictly separate non-infectious and infectious areas. (3) To prepare for attacks from outside, it is later explained. Why did such a large-scale ``fortress'' have to be built at the boundary separating the ``inside'' and ``outside'' of the sanatorium?
At Hansen's Disease Museum, we would like to reflect on the sanatorium's 100th anniversary together with everyone by introducing valuable photographs, maps, and testimonials from the time.
