Poster for the Shibadaimon Human Rights Lecture "Visiting The National Hansen's Disease Museum and Strolling Along the Cherry Blossom Avenue"

A course to learn about the experiences, prejudice, and discrimination faced by Leprosy patients and Former leprosy patients
The repeal of Leprosy Prevention Law in 1996 marked the end of the 90-year long policy of compulsory isolation of Leprosy patients and Former leprosy patients. Furthermore, following the ruling of the Kumamoto District Court in 2001, the government acknowledged the mistakes of the previous policy and has implemented various legal measures and initiatives. However, despite this, prejudice and discrimination still persist, as seen in cases of hotels refusing to accommodate Leprosy recovered persons.
This lecture will include a tour of The National Hansen's Disease Museum and a talk by museum curator Kim Kibun, as well as Tama Zenshoen, the setting for the film "An," and a walk through the forest and beautiful cherry blossom trees planted over many years by the residents of the facility. The lecture will provide an opportunity to learn about the unimaginable, tragic prejudice and discrimination experienced by Leprosy patients, Former leprosy patients, and their families, and to think, communicate, and act to ensure that such mistakes are never repeated.
