Event report

Toshima Harada (Kazumasa Harada, Curator, Keikae Kikuchi Keifuen Memorial museum (History Museum))

Kikuchi Keifuen Memorial museum (after the renewal, the "Keikaen History Museum"), which is about to reopen in May 2022 (Reiwa 4). At the beginning, a new guidance video "Walking the History of Keikaen" (screening time: about 20 minutes) will be screened to introduce the history and outline of Keikaen. We touched on the process of preserving materials at the park and the specific issues unique to the site regarding the first renewal in 2013. Regarding the renewal plan, aerial photographs and perspectives of the functions and flow line plans of the extension building (exhibition) and the existing building (storage / research), and the ingenuity of the exhibition to express the history of people connected to the land, etc. It was explained concretely using such as. He also pointed out that as a future outlook, it is important for Issues related to leprosy themselves based on the concrete steps of each person derived from the materials.
We received many questions and impressions from the participants. The National Hansen's Disease Museum will prepare archived videos from our YouTube channel later.
We will continue to provide talks on the Issues related to leprosy from various perspectives, making use of the opinions received in the questionnaire.

From the questionnaire

  • It was good to hear very valuable opinions in considering the role of the museum. I think it is important to point out that "we will find various lessons by preserving the living history of each resident and thinking deeply based on it."
  • It was good to know behind the scenes of creating a concrete museum. After the party was gone, it was a good opportunity to think about the survival of the facility that communicates Issues related to leprosy
  • It turned out that the museum has been created through a lot of discussions and work with the aim of becoming a base for the realization of a better society. As a viewer of the exhibition, I realized that it is important not only to know the facts but also to face oneself at the museum. I would like to visit Kumamoto Prefecture and visit the History Museum.
  • In order to prevent the infection of the new corona, it is Kikuchi Keifuen, which was previously freely accessible, but by May next year when the new history museum is completed and opened to the public, restrictions will be relaxed and a tour will be held. The desire to be suitable for this became even stronger after hearing this announcement.
  • From the area where I live, it is difficult to go on a day trip. I would like to spend a few days traveling around Kumamoto, including Mr. Harada's "background", Chisato Kusa. I'm looking forward to opening next year.

… We have received many other answers. Thank you very much.
