Welcome to The National Hansen's Disease Museum
  • Patients knew that once they were in the sanatorium, it was for life. So, in order to make it their “second home” they planned various festivals and events.
  • Traditional customs such as New Year’s Day、Girls’ Day, Boys’ Day, summer Bon festival, Sports day, and Christmas were celebrated. In particular, the residents invited many guests to the sanatorium to the popular Resident Kabuki Theater.
  • The young patients with mild symptoms enjoyed sports such as baseball, tennis, or table tennis and volleyball.
  • Events and sports were an opportunity for the patients to relieve themselves from the stress and monotony of their life in the sanatorium where it was even difficult to hope for recovery.
  • However, whatever events they planned required permission from the sanatorium.
  • The sanatorium had the intention of permitting these events as a way of preventing the patients from becoming rebellious.
