Welcome to The National Hansen's Disease Museum
  • The residents, longing to find meaning in life, even if they had to continue to live in the sanatoria for their remaining years, indulged in literature, music, painting, pottery and sports.
  • Each piece is their expression of being alive. Their works are created with whatever skills they might have, surmounting the inconvenience of disabilities such as impairment of the limbs or sight due to Hansen’s disease, and the severe environment that they have experienced.
  • Being absorbed in creative work was a way to liberate themselves from loneliness and distress, even while feeling unneeded.
  • Artwork and performances touched the hearts of people both inside and outside the sanatoria walls. Art was a way for the public to learn about the people affected by Hansen’s disease, as well as an opportunity to rebuild the social bonds between the residents and the society.
  • Each piece of artwork will certainly stimulate you to imagine the character of the creator and the emotions hidden in the work.
