Welcome to The National Hansen's Disease Museum
  • Life in the sanatorium was strictly disciplined and without freedom.
  • Arriving at the sanatorium, newcomers were stripped of their clothing and personal belongings and be made to bathe in a bath with cresol disinfectant.
  • At the same time all personal belongings were checked and disinfected.
  • After bathing, they were given sanatorium uniforms (clothes of the same color and design,) and utensils that had been previously used. Their names were changed so that the families could not be identified and discriminated against.
  • Money was also confiscated to keep the patients from escaping and they were given money called “sanatorium coupons” that was only valid in the sanatorium.
  • The dormitories (rooms) were shared with other residents, allocated according to sex, age and the severity of the symptoms.
