Welcome to The National Hansen's Disease Museum
  • The residents who were forced to live in sanatoria for so many years were totally cut off from their families in their hometowns. Close friends have also aged, and many have died.
  • There are many residents who have no children or grandchildren of their own because married couples were forbidden to have children.
Consequently, they have no loved ones who can take care of them.
  • Most elderly residents even after being cured, are afraid to leave the sanatoria because they are afraid of the prejudice and discrimination, that they experienced for so long.
  • The sanatoria are the sole homes to the residents. Today, they are the most treasured place for the people who live there.
